The Skibbereen Walking Group has its origins in 1998 as an informal group of people who enjoyed exploring their local byways and boreens.  Subsequently we formally registered with Mountaineering Ireland as the Skibbereen Walking Group.  Affiliation with Mountaineering Ireland has the advantage of the back up of the M.I. expertise as well as their insurance cover   Membership of Skibbereen Walking Group automatically provides our walkers with the insurance protection of the M.I. policies covering the Group's civil liability and permanent disability accident claims.

Every two weeks throughout the year we organise fairly easy ramble type walks for our members.  These Sunday afternoon walks, normally about 10-12 km and taking 2 to 3 hours, are generally in the West Cork area.  During the summer months we often journey out to walk in the peace and quiet of our local offshore islands.

For those walkers of a slightly more adventurous nature, every month Skibbereen Walking Group’s Hillwalking Section arranges a Sunday hill walk.  These walks, for the more experienced walker and venturing further afield, generally take about three to five hours.

Occasionally we also arrange more social activities for our members such as barbecues or outings by bus to enjoy walking in other areas.
